PC Games Hardware Discovers AMD Radeon RX 9070 Graphics Card BIOS Flashing

PC Games Hardware (PCGH) has found that specific AMD Radeon RX 9070 graphics cards can be flashed with the video BIOS of RX 9070 XT from a similar board design. This allows for higher clock speeds and power limits to be achieved. Although the flash does not unlock any new shaders, as the card is still limited to 56 CU or 3,584 stream processors, it does provide the RX 9070 with increased power limits and clock speeds matching the faster SKU. The flashed RX 9070 has shown significantly improved overclocking capabilities, with PCGH managing to boost performance by 15-20% over the stock RX 9070. This brings its performance level to that of a stock RX 9070 XT, as confirmed by a series of 3DMark benchmarks.

However, there are some considerations to keep in mind. The main risk is that BIOS flashing can be dangerous, and without a card with dual-BIOS, it is crucial to have a good understanding of the process. Additionally, BIOS flashing may only be successful between two cards that share a common board design. AMD board partners typically use very similar board designs for the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT, especially for the value segment SKUs.
