The AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme in ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X
Set to launch in October, the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme in the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X appears to be a significant improvement over the Z1 Extreme in the original ASUS ROG Ally and Ally X. The new APU boasts a Radeon 890M iGPU with a 33% increase in stream processors compared to its predecessor. Additionally, the new CPU features more cache and upgrades to Zen 5 and Zen 5c cores. A quick test of Doom: The Dark Ages by Cary Golomb on X suggests that this combination is proving successful.
According to the tech influencer, the Xbox Ally X was able to run Doom: The Dark Ages at 70 FPS with ray tracing and AMD FSR frame generation enabled. This was achieved with FSR upscaling the image from 540p to 1080p and a mix of medium and low settings. Notably, the power consumption and internal temperatures during gaming were impressive. Despite a TDP of 18 W and the GPU running at 97% load, the temperature remained at 57° C. This indicates that the cooling solution is quite capable, especially considering the smaller size of the gaming handheld compared to larger devices on the market.
