ASRock Introduces HUDIMM: A New Memory Standard for Affordable Computing

In response to rising memory prices, ASRock has introduced a new memory standard designed to make modern computing more accessible. The innovative "HUDIMM" (Half Unbuffered DIMM) standard aims to provide a cost-effective solution for entry-level systems and business desktops, especially during the ongoing DDR5 memory shortage.

What is HUDIMM?

HUDIMM modules are a unique take on traditional UDIMMs. Unlike standard modules that populate both 40-bit sub-channels, HUDIMMs utilize only one, effectively offering half the bandwidth and density of a typical DIMM at the same memory clock speed. This approach significantly reduces manufacturing costs, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious users who need reliable performance for everyday tasks.

Compatibility and Implementation

ASRock has collaborated with Team Group to produce the first HUDIMM memory modules. These modules have been tested and confirmed to work with ASRock’s Intel 600-series, 700-series, and 800-series chipset motherboards. To ensure seamless integration, HUDIMM support may require UEFI firmware updates, which ASRock plans to provide for compatible motherboards.

Flexible Memory Configurations

One of the standout features of the HUDIMM standard is its flexibility. Users can pair HUDIMMs with standard UDIMMs, enabling asymmetric memory configurations. For example, combining an 8 GB HUDIMM with a 16 GB UDIMM results in a total of 24 GB of memory and the bandwidth equivalent to at least three DDR5 sub-channels. This flexibility allows users to optimize both capacity and performance based on their specific needs.

HSODIMM: Expanding the Concept to Compact Systems

ASRock has also extended this concept to smaller form factors with the introduction of HSODIMM—a DDR5 SO-DIMM featuring just one sub-channel. Team Group will manufacture these modules as well, and ASRock’s Deskmini series mini-PCs, which utilize mobile-on-desktop (MoD) platforms, will support HSODIMM modules. This ensures that compact systems can also benefit from affordable memory solutions.

Addressing the DDR5 Shortage

ASRock’s HUDIMM and HSODIMM innovations are timely responses to the current DDR5 memory crunch. In addition to these new standards, ASRock is developing a new range of Socket LGA1700 motherboards equipped with both DDR4 and DDR5 memory slots. This dual compatibility provides users with greater flexibility and helps bridge the gap during periods of memory scarcity.

With these advancements, ASRock is positioning itself as a key player in delivering practical and affordable memory solutions for the client computing market.
